ONE GROUP, ENDLESS CONVERSATIONS
Le Coin Français de Newmarket is a spontaneous conversation group for adults who want to put their French conversation skills into practice. Ted Ebbers and Bev Church have been bringing us together over coffee since November 2023. Some of us grew up speaking French. Others learned it later, or are picking it up again after years of little practice.
We want French to have more of a place in our community’s everyday life. That starts with opportunities to speak it, get to know people and look forward to coming back. Our gatherings are informal, shaped by the initiative, creativity and curiosity of everyone taking part.
These are not French classes, but opportunities to have conversations in French. To benefit, you need to be able to hold at least a basic French conversation. Taking a moment to find your words is quite all right.
The atmosphere matters just as much as the conversation. We want people to feel at ease, whether it’s their first visit or they’ve been coming from the start. A smile, a little patience and a real interest in others go a long way.

We look forward to meeting you!
We’ll welcome you and help you get to know the others around the table. Conversations are more interesting when everyone has a chance to join in.
A trip, a book, a hobby or a memory can take a conversation somewhere unexpected. One question leads to another, and we often discover things we would never have thought to ask about.
A little patience, finding a word together, a smile when someone gets their point across: small things help us feel more confident and keep going. We all have something to learn from each other, whatever our level.
Sometimes we search for a word, try saying something another way or help each other along. That’s part of the conversation too. With a bit of practice and familiar faces, speaking French starts to feel easier.
We hope everyone leaves having had a chance to talk, listened to others and enjoyed themselves. The rest grows as we get to know each other.
WELCOME TO LE COIN
We encourage you to join three other people at a table of four. The small group makes it easier for everyone to take part in the conversation. Halfway through, we suggest changing tables so you can meet more people, enjoy different conversations and get to know the group better.
Le Coin Français de Newmarket holds in-person French conversation gatherings at Farm Boy, 18075 Yonge Street, and Paris Baguette, 47 Harry Walker Parkway South, in Newmarket, Ontario.
Adults from strong beginners to native speakers are welcome. You should be able to take part in a simple conversation. This is a conversation group, not a French class for complete beginners.
Participation is free. Please buy a drink or something to eat to support the businesses that welcome us.
RSVPs are optional and handled on Meetup. The button opens Meetup: RSVP on the event page or choose your date from the group’s event list. Walk-ins are welcome when space remains. Each gathering has a maximum of 20 people, including organizers. Return to Meetup to change your RSVP.
